There have been times throughout my life — some of them shockingly recent — when my first thought on waking each day is, “Dammit! Still alive.” It’s a feeling I share with those behind whole genres of humor, whose punchlines echo Squidward’s deadpan, “Too bad that didn’t kill me.”
